HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Faculty of Biology is one of the oldest centers of biological education in the Republic of Belarus. It was founded back in 1930 as the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology. Since then, it has changed its name several times, but one thing has always remained unchanged - high quality of personnel training.

Over the almost century-long existence of the faculty, over 7,000 highly qualified specialists in the biological profile have been trained.
FACULTY TODAY
Over the long period of development of biological education, a powerful material and technical base has been created, including modern chemical and biological laboratories; a zoological museum with a large number of exhibits; a scientific herbarium of the Belarusian Polesie, etc. The availability of new equipment allows the faculty to conduct scientific research at a modern level, annually publish the results of scientific work in highly rated publications.
At present, the Faculty of Biology includes three departments: biology; chemistry and forestry disciplines. The educational process is provided by over 40 teachers and employees, including corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, doctors and candidates of sciences, senior teachers. The faculty has a scientific school of the corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, professor G.G. Goncharenko.
For many years, the Faculty of Biology has been training students in the specialty 1-31-01-01-02 "Biology (scientific and pedagogical activity)" with the assignment of the qualification "Biologist. Teacher of biology and chemistry". In connection with the changes in OKRB 011-2022, the specialty received the code 6-05-0511-01 "Biology" (qualification "Teacher"), and since 2023, students have been recruited for the updated specialty. Within the framework of this specialty, training is carried out in three specializations: "Biochemistry and modern methods of analysis", "Botany and plant physiology", "Zoology, physiology and genetics". The distribution of students by specializations is carried out after the completion of the 1st semester of the 1st year on a rating basis (based on the total points scored) and a written application from the student.
The faculty also recruits students for the specialty 6-05-0821-01 "Forestry" with the qualification of "Engineer", including for a shortened period of study based on the integrated educational program of the bachelor's degree with secondary specialized education programs.
SPECIALTIES OF THE BIOLOGY FACULTY
6-05-0113-03 Natural Science Education (Biology and Chemistry)
Qualification: Teacher
Duration of study: 4 years full-time
Sphere of professional activity: institutions of general secondary, secondary specialized and higher education (teacher); research institutions (researcher); additional education system (teacher), education of children and youth.
For admission, the following are required: a certificate from the Centralized Testing in Belarusian or Russian (at the applicant's choice); certificates for profile tests: first subject (biology (CT or CE); second subject (chemistry (CT or CE).
6-05-0511-01 Biology
Qualification: Biologist. Teacher
Duration of study: 4 years full-time.
Main types of professional activity:
work as a biologist in production and research and production laboratories, botanical gardens, zoos, reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries;
education (biology teacher);
nature conservation activities;
scientific research and development.
For admission, the following are required: CT certificate in Belarusian or Russian (optional applicant); certificates for profile tests: first subject (biology (CT or CE); second subject (chemistry (CT or CE).
6-05-0821-01 Forestry
Qualification: Engineer
Duration of study: 4 years full-time, 4 years in shortened correspondence and 5 years in correspondence.
Sphere of professional activity:
- forestry institutions (forestry enterprises) and their structural divisions (forestry districts);
- forest management enterprises;
- research institutions dealing with forest issues;
- institutions of secondary specialized and higher professional (forestry) education;
- specially protected natural areas (nature reserves, national parks).
For admission you need: a certificate from the Centralized Testing in Belarusian or Russian (at the applicant’s choice); certificates for profile tests: first subject (chemistry (CT or CE); second subject (mathematics (CT or CE). When entering the correspondence shortened form, the applicant takes oral exams in the following disciplines: Forestry (first profile subject) and forest cultivation technology (second profile subject).
Graduates of general higher education have the opportunity to continue their education at the Faculty of Biology of GSU named after F. Skorina in master's and postgraduate studies in the following specialties:

Currently, the faculty has over 500 students from various countries (Republic of Belarus, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of Turkmenistan, etc.).
