On March 16, our university hosted the traditional VII International Scientific and Practical online Conference of students and young scientists “Theory and practice of teaching foreign languages: traditions and prospects for development”, the founders of which are the Faculty of Romano-Germanic Languages of Moscow State Regional University (Moscow, Russian Federation) and the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Francisk Skorina Gomel State University (Gomel, Belarus). On the part of the Russian Federation, the participants included students, undergraduates and postgraduates of Herzen University. Belarus was represented by students of the Rechitsa State Pedagogical College, students and undergraduates of the Francisk Skorina Gomel State University and Minsk State Linguistic University. This year, the focus was on such issues as the formation and development of strategies for autonomous learning activities in the process of mastering a foreign language, the development of mediative competence of high school students in the conditions of profilization of education. Reports devoted to the consideration of visualization features as a means of developing speech competence and issues of formation of communicative competence based on multimedia programs aroused great interest and lively discussion. The participants of the conference also highlighted such issues as the specifics of creating a socially oriented web quest and tasks for teaching students oral mediated translation based on the use of audiovisual materials. Much attention was paid to the consideration of the value orientations of future foreign language teachers. All the tasks were solved and the goal of the conference was achieved.
